"History shows that the best solutions to scientific problems are simple and elegant." [from On Intelligence by Jeff Hawkins]

Today I realize that I have a talent for extending ideas -- "riffing" on the ideas of others so to speak. YubNub was a riff on Jon Udell's idea of the url command line. (if I ever get around to implementing it) will be a riff on I am reading Jeff Hawkins' theory of intelligence and already I am thinking of new ideas ...

Some people are Generators. Some people are Transformers. (Pam is a Advocate+Organizer+Mediator)

So I will feed this brain of mind with interesting raw ideas from other people (from books and blogs) and see what interesting things pop out!

So maybe it would be a good idea to attend Foo Camp.

Unable to load file 'Microsoft.VSDesigner.DLL'.

If anyone gets this error message when using Visual Studio ...

COM Interop unregistration failed. Unable to load file 'Microsoft.VSDesigner.DLL'.

... check your disk space. I was close to running out of disk space. When I freed up some space, the error went away.

Things I learned setting up lighttpd

Phew - that was an ordeal. I had my YubNub web application running fine on my computer, but when I tried to run it on the Textdrive servers I had to set up this thing called lighttpd. So many things to configure (and the instructions I was following was called "Lighttpd: The Painless Way"). My oh my that was a frustrating several hours. I was up until 2 AM last night, and gave up, then attacked it for about 3 hours this morning, and finally, FINALLY, it works! Yay!

Even the name is pretty scary: lighttpd. What th.

Some things I learned setting up lighttpd:

- Subversion doesn't convert Windows/Unix line terminators by default. Silly Subversion! I would have at least expected the friendly TortoiseSVN to warn me about this.

- There is a minefield of things that can go wrong in setting up Webmin, lighttpd.conf, etc. Things that have to be commented out, little details to understand in the configuration files, error messages coming back from Webmin. Dear me, why can't I just push a button and go?

- Instead of continually buying domain names (,, - 20 bucks a pop), it would be cheaper for me (free in fact) to just make subdomains:,, Gotta figure out how to do that.

If you ever get this error message in Visual Studio.NET...

"com interop registration failed"

... check that your app isn't paused in debug mode. If it is, stop the app. Then you won't get the error.
